FRONTIER
NAME: | FRONTIER |
AWARDS: | BEST STUDENT PRODUCTION |
DIRECTOR: | AXEL SCHULDES |
FRONTIER tells the story about the 19-year-old Aniela (Vanessa Boritzka), who lives with her 54-year-old husband Boguś (Marius Biegai) in a small lumberjack’s hut in the war-ravaged Poland of 1941.
Boguś’ repression gradually takes on violent characteristics, but Aniela’s fear of the war binds her to the hut in the forest.
One night, the two German soldiers Helmut and Ralf (Jonas Brunstein & Lukas Koller) knock on the door and completely new opportunities open up, but not only for Aniela.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHY – AXEL SCHULDES
My name is Axel Schuldes and I am a German filmmaker from Regensburg.
I graduated from film school in September 2023.
My graduation film FRONTIER will be released this year and I am looking forward to presenting it to you.
Furthermore, I am currently working on my debut film and I also operate as a 1.AD and have already made a name for myself among colleagues in this position.
DIRECTOR STATEMENT
I chose to write and direct this film, FRONTIER, after my grandfather died in 2018. He rarely spoke about his experiences in the Second World War, but when he did, it was not about the cruel and terrible moments. He spoke about the moments that gave him strength. He especially praised the women and the Polish population, without whom he would not have survived the retreat from the Russian front.
Aniela reflects one of these young Polish women. A young woman in an exploited country, searching for her own strength to achieve freedom. In return, she has to defend herself against her much older and abusive husband Boguś.
The two German soldiers Helmut and Ralf are inspired by real people. Like my grandfather, Helmut has an honest and generous nature and simply wants to return to his beloved homeland. Ralf is like one of the soldiers in my grandfather’s unit who collected women like trophies and only counted his own advantage.
This film is unfortunately even more important because of the ongoing war in Ukraine, showing that character and virtues are not tied to nations, but to the people who want to embody them.
